The finish of a car is always wet, even if it is dry. To make sense of this statement, consider the fact that paint needs certain oils to keep its fresh glossy look. Ultraviolet rays from the sun and smog can dry up these essential oils, and the result is a dull and flat finish known as oxidation. If you could look at oxidized paint under a high powered microscope, you would see a surface that looks dry and cracked like the desert.   When it occurs, oxidation appears as dull and dry spots on the finish and usually is first noticed on the flat horizontal areas of the car. If paint residue appears on your wash mitt, you definitely have an oxidation problem. The solution to oxidation is to remove the uppermost surface of dead paint. To do that we have three basic choices:

• Since cleaners and polishes removes paint, they will also remove the wax on top of the paint. Be sure to rewax any area that has had a polish, cleaner or rubbing compound treatment.
• You won’t often need to use a polish or cleaner if you diligently follow the advice in the WebCars! Auto Detailing: Secrets of the Experts page. If you wash your car regularly and maintain a good coat of wax, contaminants won’t have the chance to ruin the cars finish.
• If you have any concerns about your cars surface, consider consulting a detailing professional. Shop around for one with experience and who knows their car surfaces. They’ll be able to tell you exactly what your car needs depending on its situation. Paying them to do the work has the distinct advantage of knowing the job will be done correctly. You can then regularly wash and wax the car, having gotten off to a good start by having your paint professionally prepared.

Care for your new car paint is really as simple as 1, 2, 3. Let me break down the 3 specific categories for you and you can see just how simple and doable this can be!

1.) Car washing

Any of the long time and regular visitors to my sites knows my philosophy on car washing; it’s grunt work! I know there is a select group of people who consider it almost therapeutic to break out the wash bucket and proceed to spend the next hour or two washing their cars by hand; I am not one of these. Perhaps I would if this was all that was needed to keep your new car paint looking fabulous for ten years or more; but it is not! Regular waxing and detailing are also required, but if you expend all your time and energy just to hand wash your car, there is nothing left for the equally as critical steps of waxing, polishing, detailing. See the dysfunction in this rationale? So, here is my plan:

• Outsource this task to a quality 100% cloth, or 100% hand car wash.
• Buy back that time and effort through this outsourcing technique.
• Now you have the time and energy to do the more critical steps of proper paint care like waxing and detailing.

2.) Cleaning with the Clay Bar

Not to be confused with cleaning in the way you might think washing to be; cleaning your cars paint is not only a different process, but a critical one. Pollution is a reality of life; and it is everywhere! Potential threats to our new car paint can come in many forms and ways; most of which are less than obvious to most people. One of the unique tools of the auto detailing industry is called the surface preparation bar, or clay bar for short. named after its physical characteristics, the clay bar is like a palmed sized chunk of firm Play-doh. This piece of clay is used on a freshly washed car by rubbing back and forth on your cars paint. This piece of clay lifts and removes embedded pollution from your paint, that normal washing and waxing will never remove. Traditionally, most manufacturers of these products will sell their clay bars with a spray lubricant to create a slippery barrier between the paint, and the clay bar during use.

• Use after washing, and prior to waxing.
• The answer to smooth and pollution free paint.
• Use periodically whenever you start to feel the grit of pollution embedded into your cars paint/
• Regular use of the clay bar only requires a few additional moments to the car waxing process.

3.) Waxing

For many people, waxing your cars new paint is a labor of love. It is a real positive emotional trigger to see the results of your labors, as you stand back and admire the superior shine and depth that car wax has the ability to create! As a car owner, you have a few choices when it comes to choosing protection and enhancement of your new car paint. Let’s break them down so you know what strategy to apply that works in your world.

• Wipe down all vinyl, leather and plastic surfaces with a damp cloth.  A microfiber detailing towel is   excellent for this task, as it will leave a lint-free, dust-free finish.
• Pull out your floor mats, and shake or brush off the dirt and debris.
• Pick up trash (that old banana peel you tossed into the backseat), and empty   the ashtray and console storage bins.
• Wipe down your door jambs and doorsills with a damp towel.
• Wipe down your interior glass and your rearview mirror with a damp   microfiber detailing towel.  If your windows are relatively clean, you don’t   need to use a glass cleaner.

Monthly Car Interior Detailing

Once a month your car’s interior will need a little more than a quick   wipe-down.  After a month, your interior glass will have some film buildup, the   carpet will need to be vacuumed, and the dash, console and other vinyl parts   will need to have their protection renewed.  Here’s what I recommend:

• Follow all of the steps for the Weekly Interior Cleanup.
• Vacuum the interior carpet, seats, seat crevices and console.
• Clean the interior glass with a good glass cleaner and a    microfiber detailing towel.
• Apply a vinyl   protectant with an ultraviolet (UV) light inhibitor to the dash, console and   tops of door panels (the areas with the most sun exposure).  I find that a foam   applicator works the best.

Quarterly Interior Detailing

• Follow all of the steps for the Monthly Interior Detailing. Follow all   Monthly Interior Detailing Steps.
• Clean and protect all leather and vinyl upholstery.
• Clean and protect all rubber door, trunk and hood seals.

Because cars and kids go hand in hand, I have added these additional “How to clean car upholstery” tips to include a little something regarding baby car seats. Because car seats can be disassembled, your car interior cleaning can often be more thorough. The following steps offer additional tips of cleaning these “urchin restraining devices.”

• Washing appropriate covers and padding in the clothes washer is the most ideal.
• If you are unwilling to disassemble, then spot cleaning will tide you over.
• Most mom’s and dad’s underestimate how much liquids such as milk, juice, etc., actually spill, so lingering smells often reside underneath the cloth liners of the seating areas of the baby seats.
• Make sure you clean hard plastic base of baby car seat with cleaner to remove any spills that may have seeped through
• .
• Treat area after cleaning with Febreze or other odor control spray as needed.
• Seat belts of the car and baby car seats are especially difficult to thoroughly clean. Use soda water to flush and clean seat belts as well as possible. If smell lingers, try application of Febreze product.

Bumper stickers leave a sticky, ugly residue behind once you remove the actual  sticker. You may not even be able to remove the sticker itself because the glue  will not budge. You cannot use the same methods for removing a sticker from a  car’s bumper as you can with other surfaces, since you may scratch the car’s  paint or damage the finish. Fortunately WD-40 will not damage the paint on  modern cars,  giving you an edge in removing the glue once and for all. 1 Heat the bumper sticker glue with a hair dryer. Put the hair dryer on the  highest setting and blow the hot air on the glue for about three to four  minutes.

2 Spray down the glue with WD-40 and let it sit for five  minutes.

3 Remove the bumper sticker glue with a plastic scraper. You will have to make  several passes with the scraper, making sure to clean off glue residue that has  gathered on its edge.

4 Soak a microfiber cloth with rubbing alcohol. Rub the area where the bumper  sticker was with the cloth to remove any leftover glue.

5 Wash the area where the bumper sticker was applied. Apply a good coat of wax  and polish it thoroughly.
